On April 4 students Ciro Castillo Rojo and Rosario Ponce López disappeared in the Colca Valley. Thirteen days later a rescue group found the girl near Nevado Bomboya. Castillo is still missing. El Comercio published a story today to help tie up some lose ends in the case.
Why were they traveling alone?
Although many have asked this question, there is still no clear answer. Ciro's father said his son had traveled before the area and had general knowledge of survival and was studying forestry engineering.
However, this is not a strong argument for two young people to have decided to go on an adventure, and that while several tourists can make the journey from Tapay to Madrigal (place where they were going) walking or cycling for several hours, these journeys are usually taken as groups and accompanied by guides, as the area is very remote.
Why did the pair separate?
Martín Cuentas, who participated in the search for the student, said Ponce had told him they separated because she felt bad and was vomiting blood, so she decided to stay in a shelter while he went for help.
However, Ciro's mother, Rosario García Caballero, said that Ponce told her in a telephone conversation that her son went to see where some nearby light was coming from, probably heading in the direction of a village. But he never returned.
In an interview yesterday by our correspondent Carlos Zanardi, Ponce explained that each day she is remembering something new, so she is expected to give a definitive version in her statement to the police soon.
Rosario Ponce López helps with search efforts to find Ciro Castillo Rojo.
How advanced has the search been?
Ciro's father indicated that only 50 percent of the area has been combed for his son.
"We are at a 50 or 60 percent in a thorough search of the area. We must take into account that is a very steep mountain and a completely irregular topography," CPN said.
CPN also said they hope that "the Army general staff will send more help to replace rescuers who have dropped because they were exhausted and clarified that the investigation is on one side and the search is another."
Thanks to the new information from Ponce, a surveyor map has been drawn of the area where they were lost, covering the districts of Madrigal and Tapay.
It is recalled that from May 5 to May 8, mountain guides José Antonio Castañeda and Abel Colan decreased progressively along the cliffs where Ciro could presumably be without finding any trace.
Also, the search with rescue dogs was hampered by the lack of logistics and favorable conditions for the animals to become acclimated to the terrain and the area.
Were they lovers?
When they were lost, several media reported they were just friends, but have since switched to the version that they were a couple.
The relationship has not been entirely clear. The mother and brother of Ciro have said that they were lovers, but Ponce's parents have not said anything about it. She referred the young man as "he" or "Ciro," they say.
"I think that Ciro is alive and every day is learning something new to survive. He is taking care of himself," Ponce told El Comercio.
When rescued, the first thing she asked was who had won the election.
Why does Ponce always seem happy?
Another factor people are asking is why does Ponce always seen smiling for the cameras and not sad or serious?
"It's my character. I'm not used to the cameras or attention. I have always been low profile, I am a person who does not like to be the center of attention as people film me and throw microphones in my face. It makes me nervous and that nervousness manifests itself in a smile," she said in an interview with El Comercio.
Her father, Eduardo Ponce, acknowledged that she is a very happy girl. "I would hope that she has the spirit that she has always had, one of happiness. If you see her photos, she always appears smiling," said her father days after her rescue.
A professor and recognized expert in face reading, Rosa María Sifuentes, told La Républica that the different expressions of Ponce does not show lack of feeling for Ciro. Moreover, she said that by reading her gestures she denotes emotional distance.
For Freddy Vasquez, a psychiatrist at Honorio Delgado Noguchi Mental Health Institute, she has a pathological diagnosis of personality changes as a result of the hard times she has been through.
Case of missing Ciro Castillo to be closed next week

The public Ministry of Arequipa will next week close the case on the disappearance of Ciro Castillo Rojo, who has been missing for more than 80 days in the Colca Valley.
The chairman of the board in Arequipa, Jesús Fernández, said investigations would continue to exhaust all possibilities.
Official sources revealed that the case will be closed because so far no evidence of crime has surfaced during the investigation nor through psychological tests. However, it was ruled that the case may be reopened later for further investigations, should new evidence or information become available.
In my humble opinion, I think that the mastermind is Rosario Ponce because since they were lost and first the police found Rosario Ponce, She declined to comment on how things were raising.
I suspect she has had some accomplices because Rosario is petite and Ciro is strong. there are some evidences pointing to Rosario as the culprit, she was not clear from the beginning of the investigation.
